Calculate your parcel’s weight

Before selecting Calculate: Check that you have entered packaging dimensions rather than product dimensions, and that every measurement uses the correct unit.
For packages with different dimensions, calculate each parcel separately. A combined estimate may also differ from the carrier’s final total if it compares or rounds weights separately for each package.
Understand your calculator results

For Boxit4me billing, round the chargeable weight up to the next 500 g increment. For example, a result of 4.8 kg becomes a billing weight of 5 kg. A result already at an exact increment, such as 4.5 kg, stays at 4.5 kg.
This tool estimates weight, not a shipping price. Your final billable weight depends on verified warehouse measurements and the applicable service rules.
Worked example: 3 kg actual weight becomes 5 kg billing weight
Suppose you are shipping one parcel with these measurements:

Step 1: Calculate volumetric weight
40 × 30 × 20 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg
Step 2: Compare actual and volumetric weight
The actual weight is 3 kg, while the volumetric weight is 4.8 kg. The higher value is 4.8 kg, so the parcel is charged by volumetric weight.
Step 3: Apply the 500 g billing increment
Round 4.8 kg up to the next half kilogram: 5 kg.

The package weighs 3 kg on a scale, but its size produces a higher billing weight. This example illustrates weight calculation only; it is not a shipping quote.
How to calculate volumetric weight
Volumetric weight converts a parcel’s size into a weight used for shipping calculations.
Centimetres and kilograms
Volumetric weight in kg = length × width × height in cm ÷ divisor
Using a divisor of 5,000:
Volumetric weight in kg = length × width × height ÷ 5,000
Inches and pounds
For a service using an imperial divisor of 139:
Volumetric weight in lb = length × width × height in inches ÷ 139
Use the divisor specified for your service. The 5,000 and 139 formulas are common conventions for their respective units, rather than perfectly equivalent unit conversions.
If you calculate a result in pounds, convert it to kilograms before applying a 500 g billing increment.
Chargeable weight and billing weight
Chargeable weight = whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric weight
Billing weight in kg = chargeable weight rounded up to the next 0.5 kg
Do not round down or use the nearest half kilogram. Always round upward unless the result already falls exactly on a 500 g increment.
How to measure your parcel correctly
Use the final shipping package whenever possible.
- Weigh the complete parcel. Include the box, contents, padding and any additional packaging.
- Measure the outside. Record the length, width and height at the widest points.
- Include bulges or protrusions. Measure the space the packed parcel actually occupies.
- Keep units consistent. Do not mix centimetres and inches in the same calculation.
- Measure again after repacking. Changes to the outer box can affect both actual and volumetric weight.
Measurements provided by a retailer may describe the product rather than the shipping package. If packed measurements are unavailable, treat your calculation as provisional.
Can a smaller box reduce your shipping cost?
A smaller box may reduce the billing weight when volumetric weight is higher than actual weight. Reducing empty space can help, provided the contents remain properly protected.
However, reducing package volume does not always reduce the price. If actual weight is already higher, a smaller box may leave the chargeable weight unchanged. A small reduction may also remain within the same 500 g billing band.
For multiple purchases, package consolidation may help reduce unnecessary outer packaging. Compare the final packed measurements and any service fees before deciding.
Why might the final billing weight differ?
An estimate can change when:
- The warehouse records different dimensions or weight.
- Additional protective packaging is needed.
- The chosen service uses another divisor.
- Dimensions or weights are rounded under carrier rules.
- Packages are assessed individually rather than as one combined total.
- Consolidation or repacking changes the final shipment.
